We’d expect nothing less from EastEnders’ much-anticipated Christmas episode, which had a terrible secret (nearly) revealed, two marriages we didn’t actually see, two disastrous Christmas dinners, the mother of all bombshells, and a legendary one-liner from Jean.
The annual holiday spectacular arrived, delivered, and left us with more questions than answers, as it always does. As Christmas Day draws to a close in Albert Square, here’s what’s left to ponder:
1. Will Gray ever get caught out?
Okay, this is becoming ridiculous. We waited and waited, but Gray still didn’t get his Christmas Day retribution tonight, despite all the build-up.
That’s right, Gray is still a free, dangerous, and now married man, thanks to his success in stopping Whitney’s quest. However, it appears like the walls are finally closing in. Hurrah!
After eventually realizing Gray had killed Chantelle, Whitney teamed up with Kheerat (who had remarkably managed to pull the wool over our eyes, bravo). But she wasn’t quite as astute as the murdering lawyer to entirely outsmart him.
Gray soon realized what Whitney was up to when Chelsea was not to be found prior to her nuptials tonight, and he managed to persuade his nervous bride to proceed down the aisle nevertheless. To make matters worse, Gray managed to persuade the rest of the Walford inhabitants that Whitney was out to break up his relationship out of jealousy.
Chelsea ultimately came to her senses after reading Chantelle’s heartbreaking forum posts and begged Kheerat and Whitney to help her just when it appeared like all hope was lost. Could Chelsea’s sudden awakening be the catalyst for Gray’s long-awaited demise?
2. Is Chelsea in danger?
Chelsea’s fantasy winter wedding turned into the bleakest of nightmares, making for a drab (pardon the pun!) Christmas.
Chelsea found it difficult to accept Whitney’s urgent pleas to cancel the ceremony, but she may come to regret her decision now that she knows what he’s like.
Chelsea’s life came crashing down around her when she learnt the full magnitude of Chantelle’s trauma just after saying her wedding vows tonight – and the major issue now is whether she can prevent a similar fate.
When EastEnders returns for fresh drama tomorrow night, Chelsea will be forced to keep up the happy-married act while she devises a desperate escape plan. But, as Gray’s body count rises, will she be able to keep herself safe?
3. What will Whitney and Kheerat do next?
Whitney and Kheerat may have been able to open Chelsea’s eyes to Gray’s vicious background, but what are their plans now? Kheerat was enraged by Whitney’s rash one-woman attempt to expose Gray tonight, especially when her plans went awry.
As a result, Whitney has now become the most hated person in Walford, which means she may be in for a struggle when it comes to making her next move.
Whitney and Kheerat’s emphasis will now change to making sure Chelsea gets away from Gray – and fast – but how will they achieve it?

4. Is Sandy telling Dotty the truth?
Who could have predicted that? Except that a large number of fans had. After revealing one paternity secret, EastEnders revealed another: Rocky is Dotty’s father.
That’s right, after their catastrophic Christmas dinner, Sandy delivered the mother of all bombshells on her daughter Dotty. As they ate the turkey, Dotty betrayed her Uncle Tom, admitting that he was Tom Cotton, and not Sonia’s father at all.
While Sonia and Kathy were reeling from the disclosures (more on that later), Dotty was given a rude awakening when an unfeeling and uncaring Sandy revealed that Rocky had a far greater connection to them both than she had realized. Is she, however, telling Dotty the truth? What will Dotty do now that Sandy appears to be gone?
5. Is Phil going to prison?
Phil Mitchell may not realize it, but he may have just celebrated his final Christmas as a free man. As Phil struggled to reconcile his feelings for his ex-wife Sharon and his new partner Kat, he had no idea that a more thorny seed was being planted elsewhere.
That’s because, as promised, Jack has filed a police report against Phil for his role in Vincent’s death three years ago. Both Jack and Howie promised to do the right thing for Kim, who has spent months trying to find closure in the wake of her husband’s untimely death.
In tonight’s episode, Phil faces a major new issue as he decides to flee the country over the holidays to avoid the law. Is it possible, though, that his luck has now run out?
6. And is Phil really over Sharon?
Kat was enraged when Sharon showed up for her family dinner (“with Keanu’s baby”), destabilizing her Christmas Day preparations.
Kat had had enough of Sharon and Phil’s reminiscing and spent the day pouting at her office after buttering the potatoes and scorching the Yorkshires.
Knowing he needed to make peace, Phil tracked down Kat and convinced her that he had no desire to be with Sharon. Phil dropped the L-bomb to reaffirm his devotion to Kat, and their relationship appeared to be back on track. But, as far as he and Sharon are concerned, are things ever truly over?
7. Can Rocky be redeemed?
To be fair, he deserved it – but Rocky is another Walford resident who didn’t have a particularly pleasant Christmas as a result of Dotty uncovering his lies.
While Rocky thought a temperamental Sandy was the most serious threat to his secret, he had no idea that his collaborator Dotty was poised to throw him under the bus.
Sonia and Kathy were both devastated by the discoveries that Rocky had been deceiving them all along, and they vowed to never work with them again. Despite Rocky’s fervent pleadings that he loves them both deeply, Sonia and Kathy were adamant in their determination to get rid of him for good, leaving Rocky’s future on the Square in doubt.
All eyes will be on Rocky as he tries to dig himself out of a hole, but fans can come back here at midnight on Boxing Day to find out where the tale will go next.
8. Is Mick growing suspicious of Janine?
Janine went above and above today to give her daughter Scarlet the Christmas of her dreams, but we all know who she’s really trying to please.
When she kissed an uncomfortable Mick under the mistletoe, the Walford troublemaker thought her Christmas wish had been realized, and she’ll take her scheming to a whole new level in tomorrow night’s episode.
Given that Mick seems agitated by the festive kiss debacle – and we already know that Linda will make a brief appearance in the next part of this story – she could be left red-faced. Is Mick finally waking up to the fact that he’s taken on more than he can handle with Janine?
9. What happens next?
If tonight’s drama wasn’t enough, fans will be able to relive it all tomorrow with a new gripping episode.
The aftermath of Chelsea and Gray’s wedding will be explored in tomorrow’s Boxing Day special, as Janine decides to take her seduction plans for Mick to the next level.
In the coming weeks, Phil will take unexpected action when he discovers he’s set to be arrested, Stacey and Martin will go head-to-head, Bobby will make a disturbing discovery, and Linda Carter will make a dramatic return.
