BBC EastEnders fans divided over Sam Mitchell return as some think she’ll be ‘ruined just like Janine’

Sam Mitchell’s return to EastEnders has been confirmed, and fans will not have to wait long to see her again. The popular character will be brought back to the soap, with Kim Medcalf repeating her role, which she last played in 2005.

With the news out, people have expressed their mixed feelings on whether a Sam Mitchell comeback is required. “Character is already wrecked, don’t see the point in her honestly!” one fan wrote on the Digital Spy Forum, implying that Sam’s inclusion in the serial will be pointless.

Another viewer commented that her Sam doesn’t have a strong enough storyline and that she will be “ruined exactly like Janine,” who had recently returned to Albert Square, saying: “I’m curious as to what her homecoming story is. I’m presuming it’s to get Phil to become an informant because he refuses to listen to Sharon or Kat.”

Including: “After that, I’m expecting she’ll run into Ricky or something and decide she wants to be near to him again, so she buys the Vic while Mick is gone. But knowing EE, they’ll attempt to make it needlessly extravagant and destroy her homecoming, just like they did with Janine.”

Others, however, appeared to disagree, with one user writing, “Fab not long now so can’t wait for this,” and another saying, “Looking forward to Sam returning.”

A third fan of the show predicted that her storyline would be mediocre at first, but that it would improve over time, saying: “I’m cautiously optimistic, but I’m not expecting her to return and instantly be amazing, especially since she’ll undoubtedly be heavily involved in Phil’s story, which isn’t particularly compelling in my opinion. However, having her back on a long-term basis is a huge plus for me.”

Daniella Westbrook played Sam Mitchell in the first season. From July 1990 to 2000, the now 48-year-old actress was in the opera as a young 15-year-old schoolgirl, before returning briefly from 2009 to 2016.
