BBC EastEnders’ Jamie Borthwick has uncommon phobia which left him too scared to leave home

Jamie Borthwick, who plays Jay in the soap, has a phobia of vomiting.

A BBC EastEnders actor has expressed his fear of getting sick. Jamie Borthwick, who portrays Jay on the soap, suffers from a fear of vomiting.

Jamie, a BBC EastEnders fan, explained on the Lads, Dads, and a Couple of Beers podcast: “I’ve never really talked about it, but I have a real fear of getting sick, which is known as emetophobia.

“I’ve had a lot of trouble with it, and it’s had a lot of negative consequences for me. I didn’t want to go out, and I certainly didn’t want to shake anyone’s hand.

It became an obsession with germs, and I became quite OCD about it.” I didn’t want to be around a lot of people in a crowded environment. It just made me feel a little jittery.”

The 27-year-old soap star went on to say: “I’ll never be okay with being sick, but I’ve gotten to the point where I can cope with it and deal with it as best I can.

“Now I see what you’re getting at. I’ve got a toolbox full of tools to manage it, and I’m aware that there will be times when I’m not in the environment I want to be all of the time.

“I suppose I learned to deal with it the best I could at the time, which was about five or six years ago. I was just being selfish, and I wouldn’t put myself in a situation where I felt threatened.”
