Meet the man behind the nation’s favourite bad boy
Phil Mitchell has been a fixture on our television screens for over three decades, during which time he has established himself as the quintessential TV bad boy.
Phil has provided EastEnders with endless drama, affairs, and violence, as brilliantly portrayed by Steve McFadden.
You never know what the Walford tough guy will do next, but it’s always entertaining to watch.
While we all think we know Phil, we actually know very little about the man behind the mask.
Steve, 62, is from Westminster, London, and has worked in a variety of jobs since graduating from high school, including carrot picking, plumbing, and working at a builders’ merchant.
Later, he decided to go to university and then to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London to study acting.
Before joining EastEnders in 1990, he landed his first acting role in the film The Firm in 1987.
He and Ross Kemp were cast as Phil and Grant Mitchell, the boy’s parents, and Barbara Windsor was cast as Peggy Mitchell, the boy’s mother.
In true Mitchell fashion, the two wreaked havoc on the streets of Albert Square until Ross exited the show while Steve remained.
Steve is now estimated to be worth £2.5 million, thanks in part to his thirty-year run on EastEnders.
He’s also received numerous accolades, including Best Soap Actor at the Inside Soap Awards and Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards in 2016.
In the early 2000s, Steve and fellow EastEnders actress Lucy Benjamin had a high-profile romance.
He and Lucy, who played Lisa Fowler on the show, started dating in 1999 and dated for four years before calling it quits in 2003.
Steve has five children outside of the Square, the most recent of whom was born in 2016.
Sue Marshall, Steve’s childhood sweetheart, is the mother of his eldest son Matt, who is now in his mid-thirties.
With his previous partner Angela Bostock, he had two daughters, Teona and Mollie Jane.
When his then-girlfriend Rachel Sidwell gave birth to daughter Amelie Tinkerbell in 2009, he became a father for the fourth time. They had a brief relationship before breaking up two months after Amelie was born.
In June 2016, Steve and long-term girlfriend Karen Cairns welcomed their fifth child, a daughter named Frankie. The couple is thought to be still together.
