BBC EastEnders: Where the Butcher family are now from sad death to dropping fame to become builder

Since 1987, when charismatic car salesman Frank Butcher, played by Mike Reid, first moved to Walford, the Butcher family has been an integral part of the EastEnders cast.

A year later, he was joined by his girlfriend Pat, who was soon followed by his children Ricky, Diane, and Janine.

The family became the landlords of the Queen Vic pub, cementing their status as Albert Square’s most famous family.

Mike Reid’s role as Frank on EastEnders lasted 18 years, as the character was written in and out of the show until 2005.

He continued to act until 2007, appearing in two episodes of The Bill that year, but he died of a heart attack at the age of 67 while on vacation in Marbella, Spain, not long after.

Meanwhile, Mike’s on-screen wife Pam St Clement, who played Frank’s other half Pat, worked on the soap for 25 years.

Pam’s final appearance on EastEnders was in July 2011, but she went on to star in a feature-length special episode of Casualty after hanging up her famous earrings for the final time. In Gone to Pot: American Road Trip, she also went on a cannabis adventure.

Pam appeared on an episode of Loose Women in August 2019, where she talked about a horrific knee injury she suffered during a typhoon in Australia.

Sid Owen, who played the dimwitted Ricky Butcher in the 1998 film, is now a fitness enthusiast who enjoys swimming and running.

But Sid’s life wasn’t always like this, as he revealed in his autobiography From Rags to Ricky that he struggled with drug addiction.

Sid remained a member of the EastEnders cast for six years, excluding a two-year hiatus between 2000 and 2002 when he attempted to pursue a career as a pop musician, until his character Ricky was finally written off the show in 2004 due to a lack of storylines.

Sid appeared on I’m a Celebrity the following year, but nowadays he lives in a nine-bedroom mansion in France.

However, after his jaw was shattered in a freak golf accident last year, the star has stayed away from the cameras, admitting in an episode of Loose Women that the injury has harmed his confidence.

Because she hasn’t appeared in Albert Square since 1991, Ricky’s sister Diane, played by Sophie Lawrence, may be a little harder for fans to remember.

When she first appeared in 1988, she was only 15 years old, but she left after three years to pursue a music career.

Sophie made three brief returns to EastEnders after reaching No. 21 in the UK Singles Chart with her cover of Donna Summer’s 1977 hit Love’s Unkind in 1993, 1994, and 1997, but she quit after her third comeback, describing it as “going back to school and none of your friends are there.”

Sophie’s acting career, however, has continued in the theatre, with roles in The Rocky Horror Show and Boogie Nights.

Liam, Ricky and Bianca’s son, is another Butcher who should not be forgotten. James Forde portrayed the character from 2008 until 2015, when he resigned.

James has since retired from acting and is now employed as a builder.

Janine, who has been played by three actresses since her debut on the show in 1989, is by far one of the most memorable Butchers.

Janine was perfectly embodied by Charlie Brooks, who took over the role in 1999. She is best known for the scene in which her character pushed Barry Evans down a hill, killing him.

In 2004, Janine was written out of EastEnders, only to be reintroduced in 2008. During those four years, Charlie continued to act, appearing in films such as Bleak House, Robin Hood, and Beverley Allitt, a 2006 thriller about a killer nurse.

She remained a part of the story plot after her return to Walford until 2012, when she was written out of the show once more.

After two long-term relationships, Charlie recently described herself as “happily single” in her personal life.

Kiki, her adolescent daughter, wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and pursue a career in acting. Kiki has already appeared in The Kennedys and The Dumping Ground.

Charlie made a name for herself outside of EastEnders by competing in Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and winning I’m a Celebrity the following year. She teaches acting classes as well.

Her character Janine was brought back to EastEnders in September 2021, much to the delight of fans who were delighted to see her return.
