Coronation Street actor Mikey North is better known for his portrayal of Gary Windass. While the character appears to have recently starred in some nail-biting storylines, the actor enjoys a much quieter life away from the screen
Mikey North has been a regular on Coronation Street since his role as Gary Windass was cast in 2008.
Since then, he’s starred in a number of major plots, including a prison sentence and a murder escape. The Coronation Street drama came to a climax this week after he was caught up in Sharon Bentley’s evil plot, which put him in the firing line.
While Mikey’s character looks to live a glamorous life on set, the actor prefers to keep a low profile when he’s not working.
We take a peek at Mikey North’s off-set life, from his happy marriage and parenthood to overcoming his secret fear of driving.
The Scarborough native began his career in television at a young age, starring in a number of local projects before being discovered by a talent scout at college.
After developing his skills, the actor was cast in various West End productions, including Waterloo Road, Doctors, and The Bill.
He was eventually cast in Coronation Street, and his amazing acting career has gone from strength to strength. Even after 12 years on the show, it appears that the star has no plans to leave the cobblestones anytime soon, since he previously disclosed that his contract with the show has been renewed.
“I have just signed a new contract not that long back, so I am there for the next while,” he told This Morning earlier this year.by TaboolaSponsored Links
He added: “I’m loving the stuff they have given me, I’ve had a great couple of years so I can’t complain with the storylines I’ve had.
Marriage and family
Aside from his television work, Mikey is also happily married to his gorgeous wife Rachel Isherwood. The couple first met at a bar in 2013 before embarking on a whirlwind romance and falling head over heels for each other.
It was two years later that Mikey proposed and the couple went on to celebrate a stunning ceremony in Shrawley in 2016. Speaking about his big day, Mikey even admitted that he was almost in tears as he saw his bride-to-be all in her gorgeous ivory gown.
Speaking to OK! magazine at the time, he said: “Rachael looked amazing. I’m known for letting my emotions run away with me, so I was really concentrating on trying not to cry.”
Mikey and Rachel’s marriage has been full with happiness, and the couple became parents to a newborn boy named Archie two years later. Eliza, his sister, was born in 2019.
The actor also told OK! Magazine that he had been frantically pacing around the room as he awaited the arrival of the couple’s second child while speaking about the birth of their daughter.
He told the paper, “I was simply frantically pacing throughout the whole time and Rach shouted at me to sit down.”
Mikey is not just a popular actor on Coronation Street, but he also has a terrific set of lungs and has already demonstrated his amazing singing abilities.
Mikey was one of several celebrities that released a track in support of the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity in 2010.
Mikey was joined by fellow actress Poppy Jhakra, as well as stars Ian Aspinall, Rachel Hylton, and Darren Day, to perform a rendition of the Queen hit No One But You during the fundraising efforts.
While Mikey looks to be focusing on his acting career, his wife has intimated that she would want to see her husband on a future season of Strictly Come Dancing.
Overcoming hidden phobia
Mikey ultimately overcome his fear of driving the same year his daughter was born, and he was overjoyed to report that he had passed his driving test.
The actor chose to participate in E4’s reality TV show All Star Driving School following some encouragement from his wife and was able to overcome his phobias after putting off learning to drive for years.
The actor told the Manchester Evening News that he was more apprehensive about driving than he was about filming live Coronation Street.
“Learning to drive was virtually a phobia for me,” he told the outlet at the time.
“Passing my test, I’ve never been so nervous in all of my life and that includes doing the lives here. I was s****ing myself and when I passed I burst into tears like a big girl.”
SInce then, Mikey admitted to driving all over the place and is pleased that he was able to put his fears behind him.
