EastEnders cast members come together for the funeral of ‘Olive’ from On the Buses star Anna Karen

Stars’ farewell to ‘Olive’ from On the Buses: Casts of EastEnders, Coronation Street and ‘Allo ‘Allo! lead mourners paying tribute to actress Anna Karen who died aged 85 in a house fire

At her funeral in north London today, a slew of TV stars paid their respects to actress Anna Karen.

On February 22, the Eastenders and On The Buses star died in a house fire in Ilford, east London, at the age of 85.
She was best known for her roles as ‘Olive’ in On The Buses and Aunt Sal, Peggy Mitchell’s sister in Eastenders, played by Barbara Windsor.

On Friday, fellow actors and actresses were seen arriving at a Golders Green crematorium for a service.

Following the tragic fire on February 22, tributes poured in for the star, including one from Bucks Fizz singer Cheryl Baker, who described her as “an absolute treasure, both on and off the screen.”

She had a long list of acting credits, including roles in the Carry On films and a number of pantomimes, but she is best known for her role as Olive in the 1970s comedy On The Buses.

Ms Karen was best known for her role as Aunt Sal, Peggy Mitchell’s sister, in EastEnders, which she played on and off for more than 20 years.

She was married to Terry Duggan, a fellow comedic actor who played Nobby in On The Buses and also appeared in shows like Only Fools and Horses and Are You Being Served? He died in 2008 at the age of 76.

‘We are absolutely horrified at the news about Anna,’ a family friend said after the fire.

Anna lived alone in the three-bedroom house and was confined to the ground floor due to her disability and use of a wheelchair, according to her neighbors.

Carers came four times a day to check on the former actress.

Cheryl Baker led the tributes on social media in the immediate aftermath of her death, tweeting: ‘I have just heard the awful news that my fabulous mate, #AnnaKaren, has died in a house fire.’

‘What a horrible way to die; I can’t stand thinking about it.’ She was an absolute treasure, both on and off the screen, and I adored her.’

‘I just heard the awful news about the wonderful Anna Karen,’ said EastEnders actress Rita Simons, who played Roxy Mitchell in the soap. Horrible, awful, and heartbreaking.

‘She was one of the best,’ says the narrator. Anna, get some rest. I’m sending my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.’

‘I’m so sorry to hear that Anna Karen has passed away,’ Carol Challis, wife of Only Fools and Horses star John, said. She was a lovely lady who John and I met frequently at conventions. ‘It’s not right.’

‘We’re so sad about what happened to Anna,’ her agent Shane Collins added. She was a wonderful lady and a fantastic comedian.

‘The only consolation is that she will be happy to see her husband Terry Duggan and her best friend Barbara Windsor again.’

‘We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Karen has passed away,’ said an EastEnders spokeswoman.

‘In Aunt Sal, Anna created a sharp, quick-witted, and immensely popular character that the audience will never forget, just as those who worked with her on EastEnders will never forget her warmth, kindness, fun, and good humor.

‘Our hearts and prayers go out to Anna’s family and friends.’
