Janine Butcher of EASTENDERS has done everything she can to reclaim custody of her daughter Scarlett Butcher. But because she hasn’t been able to impress social workers, could something drastic happen as the distraught mother reaches her breaking point?
Janine (played by Charlie Brooks) usually has a cunning plan up her sleeve to get what she wants, but she hasn’t had much luck with regaining custody of Scarlett. In Friday’s episode, the EastEnders villain was forced to admit to Claire, a social worker, that she’d been lying about having a relationship with landlord Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) in order to look better. Claire left a broken Janine crying on the floor on the BBC soap, implying that her chances of gaining custody were now slim. Will Scarlett be kidnapped by the desperate mother?
Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and her family are currently housing Janine’s daughter.
Janine’s attempts to persuade her mother have failed, and her mother’s efforts to persuade those who have the final say have also failed.
Janine persuaded Mick to pretend to be her partner in order to appear to have a stable life in Walford in the most recent episode.
When a fight breaks out at The Vic, she’s forced to reveal her plan – in front of Claire.
When Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) overheard Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) warning him not to ruin his marriage by having an affair, he attacked Mick.
Stuart punched Mick in front of everyone, assuming the two were talking about Rainie (Tanya Franks).
The noise drew the social worker’s attention just as the meeting with Claire was wrapping up and going well.
“Tell him the truth,” Mick yelled at Janine.
“Alright, alright – me and Mick have been faking that we’re together to try and help me get custody of Scarlett,” Janine admitted.
She turned to Claire and tried to explain. “Please, please – I am so sorry.”
She added: “It was just one little white lie.”
Mick tried to help by stating: “Please try to understand, she only did it because she cares so much, she’s desperate to get her daughter back.
“She’s a good mum, I know she is.”
Claire replied angrily: “I just report back,” before fleeing the pub.
Janine, on the other hand, pursued her, pleading with Claire to understand.
“I’m not making excuses for myself,” she cried. “Even though I could.
“People up in that pub – it was hard. The closest thing I had to a mum was Pat Butcher.
“I was no my own, and now my daughter is in somebody else’s home and she’s on her own.
“And I can’t have it, I can’t have that – Scarlett is my baby.”
She yelled: “I just need my daughter back.”
“I’ll make a note,” Claire responded. “But really, in light of these recent events, I wouldn’t hold your breath.”
As the episode ended, Janine collapsed to the station’s floor and sobbed.
Janine may kidnap Scarlett if she is determined to reclaim her.
Kat is currently preoccupied with Phil Mithcell’s (Steve McFadden) impending prison sentence, so Janine may be able to reach Scarlett on her own.
She might seduce her before driving her out of the Square, causing a panic among the Slaters once they realize she’s gone.
Janine will probably be able to get quite far with Scarlett in tow, thanks to dodgy connections all over the place.
Will anyone be able to locate her before she decides to flee as far as she can?
