EastEnders’ Rainie Highway discovers the truth about Stuart’s cancer

In EastEnders, Rainie Highway has finally learned the truth about Stuart’s cancer diagnosis.

Her husband had been concealing his diagnosis of male breast cancer for months. Stuart had refused to tell Rainie about his diagnosis, despite Sonia’s insistence, and had even planned to avoid treatment.

The Highways were drawn into the ever-complicated dynamic between Mick Carter and Janine Butcher in Friday’s (January 21) episode.

Janine had persuaded Mick to pose as her partner for her meeting with Scarlett’s social worker Claire in order to gain custody of her daughter (but also ensnare Mick).

While Claire’s meeting was going well, Mick was sweating it out in the Vic when Janine’s nemesis Jay Brown found out about the deal she’d made with Mick.

Jay was still enraged about being set up by Janine for the car heist, so he accused Mick of having an affair with her in front of the entire pub.

Mick was forced to make a decision when he went to tell Janine that she needed to come clean now that Jay had discovered her. Mick was accosted by Stuart when he returned downstairs because he misinterpreted Jay’s accusation.

Stuart believed Mick was having an affair with Rainie, so he slugged his old pal in front of Mick’s daughter Nancy, Sonia Fowler, and Rainie herself.

Rainie stepped in to clear up the misunderstanding, explaining to Stuart that she’d sought Mick’s assistance in locating Vi Highway.

Stuart decided, at Sonia’s urging, that it was finally time to tell his wife about his current health concerns.

“I’m so sorry, darling,” he explained to a stunned Rainie. “I think I thought, if I didn’t, maybe it’d stop it from happening. I just don’t want to leave you and I don’t want you to leave me.”

Rainie drew her husband close to comfort him as he began to cry. As Sonia watched the episode come to a close, the two wept together in the Square.
