EastEnders return for Courtney Mitchell as she takes over the Mitchell empire?

Courtney Mitchell hasn’t been seen on the BBC soap in almost six years, but as her family’s business crumbles, she could be drafted in to man the hold while Phil Mitchell departs.

Courtney (Alice Holly Nokes) is the daughter of Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), Phil’s (Steve McFadden) brother, and it was clear during her last stint on EastEnders that she was a Mitchell through and through. On the BBC soap, it was recently revealed that the current head of the family’s empire was facing a life sentence in prison for his role in the death of Vincent Hubbard (Richard Blackwood). However, with the likelihood that his own son Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) isn’t in the right place to take the throne dwindling, Phil’s last resort may be to enlist the help of his niece.

Ben was recently the victim of a heinous hate crime, which has left him a shell of his former self as he has had to confront his past demons.

Callum Highway (Tony Clay) sensed Phil’s pressure on his son to run the empire in his absence and informed the gangster that his son wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do so.

After some consideration, the bad boy of Walford agreed, but he is now faced with a major dilemma because neither his youngest son Raymond Dawkins (Michael Jose Pomares Calixte) nor his daughter Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) are capable of taking on the responsibilities.

He is unable to seek assistance from them because his relationship with Grant is strained, and his sister Sam Mitchell (Daniella Westbrook) has her own life aboard.

Courtney, who has always been in some sort of competition with Ben to become the next heir to the infamous empire, could be willing to drop everything to gain some status in the family.

Courtney has had a grudge against Phil since she returned to the Square in 2016 after moving to Portugal with her father.

Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) had taken her own life, and the youngster was led to believe by her father that her uncle was the one who killed her.

The matter was cleared up before she left again the following year, but not before she was put in danger by Phil’s criminal activities.

Grant was the one who had to save his daughter, and they were back on a plane and heading back to Portugal in no time.

With such a strained relationship with her uncle, it’s difficult to imagine her returning to take over the company he’s built for himself.

However, this would be the ultimate act of vengeance because she would be the clan’s leader, a position she has always desired.

Working from within, she could demolish Phil’s criminal reputation and establish herself as a formidable force to be reckoned with.

As the new femme fatale of the Square, she’ll accomplish something that even her cousin Ben won’t be able to do.

During prison visits, Ben could tell his father that he made the worst decision of his life by asking Courtney to take over the dynasty.

Despite his best efforts, the gangster was unable to persuade his son to take over the business because he was in such a bad mood.

Knowing what needs to be done, Ben will take on his cousin to reclaim his rightful place as the family’s leader.

Ben will find it difficult to bring her down because she has a legion of supporters who believe she is serious about her business.

With his father languishing in prison, the Mitchell heir to the throne could play the long game to seize power.

It’s unclear whether Alice, the actress who last played Courtney, would be interested in reprising her role on the show.

After the character’s comeback, the soap star expressed her delight at learning she would be playing Courtney.

Alice explained: “I was at home with my mum having a cup of coffee. Suddenly I heard from my agent and I just froze.

“We’d been waiting for a call for a while so we were over the moon… we couldn’t stop smiling!

“I think Courtney is a very similar character to myself. She’s quite feisty and definitely has the Mitchell side in her.

“She’s not a mean girl, she’s not malicious. She’s very kind-hearted and very much like her mum, Tiffany. I think she’s vulnerable but in an endearing way.

“However, Courtney is confident and likes a party,” the actress added, but could the perils of the last six years have changed her personality completely as she embraces the dark side?

“She learns how much she needs her family and how important family is – especially for the Mitchells,” the actress said of her character’s devotion to the infamous clan.

“Wherever Courtney goes, drama follows her. We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds. I had a great time shooting there.”

Courtney’s return to the show was a surprise to viewers the last time she did so because her return had not been announced.

Could the same thing happen this time, now that it’s been revealed that Phil has been secretly contacting her as a last resort?
