EastEnders star Barbara Smith talks Dana and Bobby and kissing scene nerves

Dana Munroe has been a breath of fresh air for EastEnders fans – and even more so for Bobby Beale. It’s unusual for soap to have a genuinely nice character without sneaky motives and sinister secrets, so Dana Munroe has been a breath of fresh air for EastEnders fans – and even more so for Bobby Beale.

Dana was brought in as a love interest for troubled Bobby, but she soon found herself embroiled in the drama of learning about his shocking past, the intolerance of bigots when she was attacked, and the horror of learning of her brother’s far-right involvement.

Barbara Smith, who plays her, says that she thinks Dana and Bobby have had their fill of angst at this point.

She discusses her hopes for the future of the relationship with Metro.co.uk, her working relationship with Clay Milner Russell, and which Walford icon she wants to work with, whether it’s #Dobby or #Bana.

It’s so #Dobby, I don’t care what anyone says.

How have you been settling in?

I’m settling in so well that time is flying by; next month will be a year since I’ve been here, which is incredible. They were all so nice to me, and I really enjoy my time there. Dana is someone I’d be friends with in real life, so it’s a lot of fun to play with her. I’ve never had the opportunity to play someone like that before. I’ve learned a lot from Ross and Charlie, who are both very experienced actors. I’m attempting to absorb all of their knowledge. It’s even more bizarre because I was a huge fan of the show as a kid.

But I’m also having a lot of fun developing Dana as a character because we first met her as Bobby’s girlfriend, so I’m having a lot of fun figuring out who she is.

Did you know from the start that you would be long term or was there a ‘testing period?’

I initially signed up for a six-month trial period to test out the Bobby storyline. Then a father and a brother were brought in. I believe they had always planned that storyline, but I’m not sure they had worked out the final details.

What have fan reactions to Dana been like?

To be honest, I am extremely fortunate. People have expressed their love for her, saying she has a golden heart, and that they want to protect her. I’ve gotten so many nice messages from people who think I’m a good actress, and there’s been so much love for Dana and Bobby’s relationship that they’ve been dubbed “adorable.” People warned me that I might get a couple of nasty messages and that it wasn’t a reflection on me, but I haven’t received any!

Was it the fact that Dana is quite pure and generally a nice person that drew you to the role?

Yes, it was – and she’s also a more innocent, wholesome version of the girl next door, which I love playing because she’s so happy and bubbly. I’d never seen a romantic story on screen before, so I was interested in giving it a shot. She has shown a manipulative side in recent situations, but she generally comes from a place of apathy and kindness. As you say, having a character like that is extremely rare in any medium.

Do Bobby and Dana have a ship name yet?

Dobby is one of my favorite characters, but #Bana appears to be gaining popularity. I suppose it’s better not to remind you of elves, but Dana and Bobby would probably dress up as elves during the holidays, so I like it!

Were you nervous with the romance scenes or did you take it in your stride?

No, there was genuine fear – I was extremely nervous. I had to get across that I liked Bobby and then fell in love with him without even touching him, especially at the beginning when we were under much stricter Covid restrictions. That was a huge undertaking. When it came to kissing, I was nervous, and Clay was as well, but he was able to reassure me and say things like “we’re in this together,” which put me at ease.

How do you get on with Clay, is it an easy working relationship?

Oh, it’s so simple; we get along so well and are such good friends; I’m so glad I met him. We take the train together to the studio, so we have plenty of time to talk. It’s fantastic.

Do you want Dana and Bobby to last or would you want more hardship?

I’d like for them to stay together because they have so much in common, such as their love of anime and other shared interests. To be honest, I believe they’ve had enough hardship!

They’re both so young and have never been in a serious relationship, so they’re having a hard time navigating it, and it shows. So I believe that’s what’s causing them problems.

It’s nice to have a romantic pairing that young viewers can relate to…

They’re two teenagers in love, and they’re completely normal in that regard. I think it’s important to convey to viewers that they’re just a regular couple, and I recall Jon Sen referring to them as Romeo and Juliet when I first started. Underneath it all, they’re head over heels in love.

Which other characters would you like Dana to mix with?

It was the whole Stacey and Max affair when I watched it, and I am a huge Lacey fan. Dana hasn’t had much interaction with her yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing how they get along. All of this piques my interest. Lacey is a force to be reckoned with.

How has your life changed?

The most significant change for me is that people now recognize me. It’s still surreal that people recognize me, and that they want to talk to me. That is something I hold very dear to my heart. It’s also given me a lot of confidence; I was already confident, but it’s helped me even more.

What storyline would you give Dana if you were in charge?

Oh, that’s a good question, and it’s a difficult one! I’d like to see Dana bossing people around, telling them what to do, and carrying out her own visions. She could also work with people who have become radicalized and are attempting to stop it. That could be the point at which she comes into her own and develops a stronger voice.
