Zak Dingle, an EMMERDALE mainstay, could be killed off in upcoming scenes on the ITV soap, as it appears the village’s iconic family will be at odds over some devastating news.
Zak (Steve Halliwell) has been a main character on Emmerdale for over two decades and has become one of the show’s most popular characters. He has tried to guide his family through numerous difficulties over the years, as well as deal with the drama in his own life on the ITV soap. However, his time may be running out, as the head of the infamous Dingle clan may be on his way out of the Dales, a death that could turn his grieving relatives against one another.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed that Zak will be leaving the show, producers Jane Hudson and Laura Shaw teased that 2022 would be a difficult year for the Dingles in interviews with Express.co.uk and other outlets.
Laura stated, “As we approach 2022, the Dingles have a lot going on. Two of our most beloved Dingles are about to face major life changes that will have far-reaching consequences for the entire village.
“Over the course of 2022 and into 2023, the consequences will be long-lasting.
“We’ll see drama, joy, fun, laughter, agony, pain, grief, and despair hit this family in the coming months,” she continued, implying a death in the family.
“They’ll be pulled in a lot of directions this year and will be at the heart of our very biggest stories,” the producer added, but will this story revolve around Zak’s demise?
With such strong and powerful family members, it can be difficult for them to express their emotions, and their feelings are expressed in other ways.
It is usually an argument that leads to some honest truths being heard, and this is what could erupt in the aftermath of Zak’s death.
This could lead to a life-changing situation that involves two clan members and has far-reaching consequences.
Of course, the family has always had financial difficulties, and with the patriarch’s death, they may find themselves fighting over his inheritance.
He may not have left a large sum of money, but the extra funds would benefit several family members, including Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter), who is desperate to reclaim the Woolpack.
Because money is the root of all evil, the Dingle family may never recover from this feud, which has split the clan in two.
With half of the family supporting one member and the other supporting the other, a massive feud could result in some dubious decisions being made in order to get the money.
This could include a family member stealing the inheritance without informing anyone else, leaving the clan guessing who the thief is.
Pointing fingers at each other could lead to an even bigger rift, and as their argument escalates, other village residents may become involved.
It could turn into a battle of the Dales, with friends turning against friends in a fight over what is right and wrong.
Steve, the actor who plays Zak, spoke about playing the iconic character for two decades in 2014, revealing that he wasn’t supposed to be on the show for as long as he was.
The actor explained to Good Morning Britain that he was only supposed to appear in two episodes of the show.
He said: “That was the original contract – to have a fight with an existing character Ned Glover and to lose the fight.
“I was only there to serve as a foil for his character, but I must have done something right because they kept bringing me back!
“I’ve never known, to be honest, how it happened. They’d bring people in and try them out for a while, and then see if it worked and invite them back.”
In 2019, the actor had to say goodbye to Jane Cox, who played Zak’s wife Lisa, after she decided to leave the role.
Despite the fact that the couple’s turbulent story in the village came to a heartbreaking end, Steve explained that he understood why she had to leave.
The soap star said: “Well, I was sad – but I know Jane very well, and I knew there were other things that she needed to do, other than do what we’ve done together for 20-odd years.
“So yes I was sad initially, although as she’s my friend in real life, I knew it might be on the way. So it came gently, rather than as a sudden shock.”
Despite the fact that they are no longer on-screen together, they remain in touch.
He told Inside Soap Magazine: “We do keep in touch, but mostly by letter. Jane loves getting my letters instead of a text or an email.
“She likes getting letters which she can look back on and think, ‘Oh, that’s how it was’.
“Then she writes back to me in a traditional letter too,” he explained.
