Carly (Gemma Atkinson) left Emmerdale in 2017 after a two-year stint in the village that centered primarily on her relationship with Marlon (Mark Charnock). Carly’s father, Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw), wasn’t entirely on board with the romance at first, but he soon warmed up. She left the ITV soap after the Woolpack chef informed her that they needed to end their relationship, and she moved away to begin a new chapter in her life. This could have included giving birth to her former lover’s child, whom she has been raising for the past five years alongside her ex-boyfriend.
Marlon will suffer a stroke in next week’s episodes of the weeknight serial drama, so the former resident’s return could come at the worst possible time.
When Carly learns of Marlon’s condition from her father, she may decide it’s time for him to meet his child before it’s too late.
The iconic character currently believes he is the father of April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) and Leo Goskirk (Harvey Rogerson).
Even though having another child would never have occurred to him, he assumed Bob would have informed him if Carly had a child.
Carly could have easily passed the child off as someone else’s and there would have been no questions asked if she didn’t want Marlon to know about the baby.
When asked why she didn’t tell Marlon about the baby, Carly explained that she was so hurt by the chef’s breakup that she didn’t want to see him again.
After forming a relationship with her ex-boyfriend Matt (Jack Hickey) shortly after her divorce from Marlon, she may have reasoned that it would be easier to convince everyone that he was the father.
Matt was also the father of her late son Billy, who died of cot death shortly before she moved to the village in 2015, so their relationship was complicated.
However, the couple may have realized that the same issues that caused them to split before were resurfacing, and they decided that it was better to split up again than to cause trauma to the child.
Given Marlon’s condition, Carly believes it would be best for him to meet the five-year-old so she wouldn’t have to hide anything from him if something bad happened during his recovery.
Carly’s co-star and former Strictly Come, Dancing contestant, Gemma Arterton has spoken out about her willingness to return to the show.
“Emmerdale has mentioned me going back,” Gemma explained, “but with soaps, the thing that people don’t realize is that the cast and crew work very long hours.”
“What I like about my radio job now is that I know when I’m going to get home every day.”
“I can plan my family life and work around being a mother.” I’ll think about it when Mia is a little older and in school, but right now it’s not feasible.
In an interview with OK! Magazine, she said, “Especially with Gorka [Marquez] doing a lot of touring and stuff.”
This is what could happen if Carly tells Marlon and her father Bob about what happened during her absence.
Viewers may learn what she’s been up to and why her romance with Matt came to an end once she’s been reintroduced full-time.
After leaving the show in 2017, Gemma stated that she would be interested in reprising her role in the future.
“I think the possibility of Carly returning is huge,” the actress said.
“She has her father and April in the village.” She didn’t say goodbye to April, so that will be a major concern for her.”
“She’ll try to have a happy life with Matt,” Gemma added, “but there will be a shadow over it because she has unfinished business in Emmerdale.”
“Carly will return,” the soap star continued in an interview with The Sun, “it’s just figuring out when and why and who she can mess up with when she gets back.”
