Emmerdale’s Chelsea Halfpenny set to marry childhood crush 16 years after they met

Chelsea Halfpenny has appeared in dramas such as Emmerdale and Casualty, but her relationship with fiancé James Baxter is more akin to a fairytale than a soap opera.

Chelsea Halfpenny, who has starred in Emmerdale and Casualty, has been engaged to her childhood sweetheart James Baxter, 16 years after meeting him for the first time.

When she was 14, they met at a play workshop. She stated that she liked him right away, but they never had the chance to get to know each other. Chelsea and James met as adults in 2018 after she followed his work, and six months later, James asked Chelsea out on a date.

James proposed to Chelsea last year after the couple fell head over heels for one other.

The former Emmerdale stars appear to be head over heels in love, as Chelsea spoke to Mirror about their romance.

She opened up about their initial meeting: “I really fancied him and he did not fancy me at all!”

“He’s a year older and I thought he was really cool but I also remember thinking: ‘Well, no wonder he’s not interested because he’s just so much older than me!’”

“We never kept in touch because he had no interest in me at all. I just really remembered him because I liked him so much.”

Chelsea secured a spot on Byker Grove, the show that made Ant and Dec famous, after they met, and she lasted for four years.

James first appeared on Emmerdale as Arthur Thomas’ half-brother Jake Doland, but he left the show just months before Chelsea was cast in the long-running serial as Amy Wyatt.

Chelsea remembered when she started as Val and Eric Pollard’s foster daughter: “When I joined Emmerdale a few people would speak about James because he’d only left a year before.

I knew who they were talking about because I remembered this wonderful boy with the spiky hair who I adored.

“Eventually we started to follow each other on Twitter but our paths still never crossed.”

Until the 2018 National Television Awards, the two never reconciled. Chelsea was with the cast of the BBC medical program Casualty, while James was with the cast of Still Open All Hours.

Chelsea reminisced on the moment they met once again: “We bumped into each other, the stars just sort of aligned. It was another six months before we got together and this time it was the other way round. He was chasing me!”

“It was soon after we got together that I told him I’d fancied him as a kid. I don’t think he believed me to start with!”

The ideal couple lives in London and recently spent time together in lockdown.
