Vanessa Woodfield and Charity Dingle, Emmerdale’s former lovers, have left fans wondering if they will reunite after the vet returned to the village late last year, but this may never happen if one of them dies.
Despite reuniting last month after nearly 18 months apart, Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) and Charity (Emma Atkins) have been trying to get along in recent Emmerdale scenes. Their lives have changed now that the former is dating Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) and the village vet is attempting to start a new chapter as a single mother on the ITV soap. During Wednesday night’s episode of the drama, however, there was a hint that Vanessa would die, as Mackenzie struggles to accept his lover’s friendship with her ex-fiancé. Vanity fans may be heartbroken if this means there will be no chance of the two women rekindling their romance as jealousy takes over and the green-eyed monster emerges.
Charity was feeling sorry for herself in the latest episode of the weeknight serial drama because she didn’t realize her son, Ryan Stocks (James Moore), was grieving for his adopted mother.
Going off the deep end, she accuses Mackenzie of attempting to drive a wedge between her and her eldest child, oblivious to the fact that her boyfriend was the one telling Ryan to tell his birth mother about his loss.
When the mother of four confided in Vanessa about her problems, she was told to “buck up her act” by the village vet.
Mackenzie assumed his girlfriend was moving on and trying to rekindle her relationship with her ex after overhearing this conversation from afar.
Charity did the same as he did with Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) by downing glasses of wine to forget about her problems.
When Vanessa realized Charity’s situation, she told her that she makes things worse for herself by repeating the same toxic cycle of behavior and blaming her misdeeds on others.
The mother of four only seems to hear things clearly when her ex speaks to her, so these words of advice persuaded her to speak with her boyfriend.
In the village, she ran into Mackenzie, who was clearly inebriated and needed to get some things off his chest about the two women.
Charity and Mackenzie were both furious with each other after the former walked out of her house with Vanessa while her boyfriend walked around with Dawn.
“To think I was going to come and apologise to you because Vanessa said I should. How stupid is she?” Charity declared.
“You big, fat rat,” she continued, with Vanessa chirping up in the background as she commented: “I am so much better off the days.”
Mackenzie mumbled something along the lines of: “This is it. Vanessa is still here after several hours “However, his words were not well received by the village veterinarian.
“A rat and a brat…don’t drag me into it,” she replied, before bidding her former lover farewell and walking away.
“No, you are it [the situation],” a drunken Mackenzie retorted, as he tried to explain why he had hit the bottle thinking the lovebirds had reunited.
To avenge what he thought had happened between Vanity and Dawn, the troublemaker planted a kiss on a furious Dawn.
As Dawn pushed Mackenzie to the ground, Vanessa spoke up as she told Charity: “You two are great for each other,” before finally going home.
Charity tried unsuccessfully to contact her former lover, but the village vet had had enough of being drawn into the toxic relationship.
“So you’ve got my son and [now] Vanessa, who is about the only person in the world I can actually talk to,” Charity raged at her boyfriend.
“Wow, you wanted to punish me and you got your way, and now we’re the same.” As she walked away from Mackenzie lying on the road, she concluded, “I’m as lost and as sad as you are.”
Mackenzie could take matters into his own hands after the episode ended, filled with jealousy and rage, to ensure that Vanity and he never get together.
With both women making disparaging remarks about him, he would have reason to kill either of them, but Vanessa’s death would have a greater impact.
He’d not only silence his love rival, but he’d also get to watch Charity mourn the loss of the woman she adored.
Charity’s punishment for putting him at the back of the line would be this, which she would have to live with for the rest of her life.
It would be interesting to see if Mackenzie could get away with killing Vanessa because he could make it look like Charity did it.
However, with Vanessa’s death, there would be no chance of Vanity ever reuniting.
Laura Shaw, the show’s producer, spoke with Express.co.uk and other media outlets about the show’s future and where the two will go in the future.
The soap boss said: “Vanessa is back and obviously that is going to set the cat amongst the pigeons for Mack and Charity.
“Will we see Charity and Vanessa back together in 2022, or will we see Vanessa head off in a new direction maybe?
“I think it’s going to be time for people to decide whether they are team ‘Vanity’ or team ‘Mackity’,” she continued, possibly hinting Vanessa’s days could be numbered.
