Home and Away facing the TV axe after 31 years as ratings hit an all-time low

It used to be a tea-time favorite for millions, but after 31 years, Home and Away is facing the axe.

After ratings reached an all-time low, the Australian soap, set in the fictional town of Summer Bay, is in danger of being cancelled.

Show managers are thought to be rethinking their prospects after a drop in viewing numbers, according to sources, though reality TV shows continue to dominate the schedules.

The soap was first broadcast in 1988 and is currently being aired in Australia on Channel 5 and Channel Seven in the UK.

Home and Away actually airs for 30 minutes from Mondays to Thursdays in Oz at 7 pm, while it airs twice in the UK – on Channel 5 at 1.15 and 6 pm.

This is likely to sadden fans of the long-running soap that along with rival Aussie program Neighbours, was a staple part of the TV calendar in the 1990s.

The sun-kissed cast consisted of memorable faces like Alf, Sally, and Fisher, with the first episode introducing long-standing characters Tom and Pippa, who arrived with their five foster children in the Bay.

Over the years, the soap has also questioned myths, such as the same-sex couple policewoman Charlie Buckton having a relationship back in 2009 with guest character Joey Collins.
