Actor Mick Innes, who shot to fame playing Rod on Home and Away, has died at the age of 67.

He had long suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a condition that caused an extensive weakening of his lungs, according to records.

At his family home in Christchurch, New Zealand, he succumbed to his fight early on Saturday morning.

Mick (pictured) was a star of the stage and screen.

The news was first shared by his cousin Geoff on Facebook, announcing that he had “stepped off the mortal coil.”

“He said I’m going to miss our phone calls, and I know that many will miss him, love you Mick.

Mick played in Netherwood, The Insatiable Moon, The Power Of Water and Apron String, as well as several television series like The Jacqui Brown Diaries, Super City and Hounds, in addition to his appearance on the iconic Aussie soap. He was also known for theater work, most recently starring in Zen Dog’s ad-libbed production. He touched on his opioid abuse past in this episode, as well as his numerous marriages and stints in rehab and a psych ward.

Mick’s cousin Geoff (pictured) says he will be missed by many.

Despite his career spanning 40 years in the industry, Mick told Stuff.NZ earlier that he had never thought of becoming an actor. In reality, when he was living in Sydney in his 20s, his big break came when he was penniless and struggling to put food on the table.

He told the publication, “I just went to see how life was there and was fortunate that I got an acting job in the TV series Echo Point.”

Mick left Grey Lynn, Auckland, to move back in with his 88-year-old mother, Dulcie, when his health deteriorated at the start of 2020.

“Her death really touched my heart because I was not beside her when she died,” he said at the time.

Three girls, Julian Innes, Mimi Toya Cole and Sarah-Jane Burchett, survive Mick.
