Jane Hazlegrove of Coronation Street spills the beans on Bernie’s new relationship.

Jane Hazlegrove, who plays Bernie Winter on Coronation Street, has revealed more details about her character’s unexpected new romance storyline.

Bernie and Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) will become an item in next week’s scenes, according to the show’s producers.

Dev’s son Aadi (Adam Hussain) teases him about not having a love life at the start of the story.

Bernie steps in to prove Aadi wrong by going on a phony date with Dev, but when Bernie and Dev spend the night together, it becomes all too real.

Jane laughed as she told Digital Spy and other media how she found out about the storyline: “It was there when I opened the script! I was overjoyed. I was ecstatic to say the least.

“‘About bloody time, and it’s great that it’ll be Dev,’ I thought. That just opens up a whole new can of worms for her, which I’m all for.

“It begins as a joke, as Bernie wishes to demonstrate to the children that people in their forties and fifties can still fall in love and have a good time.

“Dev has always been a favorite of hers, and she thinks he’s stunning. He’s a gentleman, he owns a business, he’s attractive, and he could be a great catch.

“Bernie isn’t aware of this at first. He’s just lovely to her, and he makes her feel good.”

She went on to say: “I believe they are a good match. They both enjoy a good laugh, and I think she’s a good match for him. Both of them are having a good time. They’re both consenting adults who are fully prepared for it.

“I’ve joked with the actors who play Asha and Aadi about how they feel about me being their stepmother, and they’ve been very sweet to my face about it!

“Long-term, I’m not sure the romance has the potential to be serious. Dev, on the other hand, sets off something in Bernie that no one has set off in her in a long time. He’s a decent guy, and let’s face it, she’s made some questionable decisions in the past.”

The first major stumbling block will be revealed next week, when Dev tells Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) that he only pursued Bernie because he was inebriated.

Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) overhears this and is disturbed to hear Dev behaving in this manner.

When Jane was asked how Bernie would react if she found out, she said: “I believe she would be deeply hurt and disappointed. That I don’t think would go over well. She had hoped for more from him.”
