‘Say whatever I like!’ Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman admits going off-script

When it comes to her lines on Coronation Street, DAME MAUREEN LIPMAN has revealed that she is not afraid to “throw a curveball.”

Alan Titchmash, a gardener and broadcaster, had a star-studded cast on today’s episode of his self-titled ITV show Love Your Weekend. Gyles Brandreth was followed by Dame Maureen Lipman, who admitted that she occasionally caught her Coronation Street co-stars off guard.

Maureen joined the 72-year-old host to discuss her career and how she played two different characters in Coronation Street.

She first appeared on Weatherfield in 2002 as landlady Lillian Spencer, in which she appeared in six episodes.

In 2018, she was promoted to a show regular on the soap.

“They just let me say what I want, more or less, I stick to the script,” she said of the show and keeping her co-stars on their feet.

“If I throw a curveball, they pick it up.”

She couldn’t praise the residents of Coronation Street enough, adding: “When I watch it, I am just staggered by how brilliant they all do.”

Alan inquired about her one-liners and deviating from the script, prompting her to confess that some cast members inquire, “What will you be saying in case I need to know?”

The ITV host also wanted to know what it was like to be a part of such a long-running soap and what the cast dynamics were like during the Covid filming regulations.

“I think they were a bit tentative about me at the beginning,” she answered honestly.

Going on, Maureen added: “There isn’t a social hub on Corrie; it’s bizarre as we can’t touch one another.

“If we are at the same table, it’s got to be two tables, [for instance] if you are playing scrabble with Roy.”

Fans of the show seemed to like her candid TV chatter, with mikepriestley13 tweeting: “Maureen Lipman is brilliant. I love her.”

“#loveyourweekend fab brilliant guests today #GylesBrandreth and #MaureenLipman @GylesB1,” @JaneBB continued.

A previous guest and friend of the actress Gyles spoke highly of her ahead of her appearance on the show, proclaiming: “When I look at a woman, she transforms into a Dame.

“They made Sheila Hancock a Dame after I did a series with her. I watch GoggleBox, and we both watch Naked Attraction, and then she [Maureen] is made a Dame.

Later in the show, the two teamed up, which made @prinsted sherry happy:

“It’s hilarious to see @GylesB1 and Maureen Lipman test alcohol on #loveyourweekend! These two are fantastic together.”

This was echoed by @TwoMinuteWarn: “Well, I had a great time with Alan and friends on Sunday morning, great conversations and stories! Sunday mornings should be simple! #loveyourweekend.”

Gyles had previously claimed that Prince Philip was “uncooperative” during a “nightmare” interview earlier in the show.

He said: “I struggled because the first time I wrote about him was at his invitation, he needed a biography written for one of his charities.

“I tried to do it, but he was most uncooperative. It was pretty much a nightmare.”
