Jane falls for the odd charm of the minimalist property

‘The Girl Before follows the storey of Jane, who receives the chance to live into a stunning, ultra-minimalist house designed by a mysterious architect,’ according to the official BBC plot synopsis (David Oyelowo).

‘There’s only one catch: the occupants must follow his strict rules.’ Jane begins to see how the house affects her in unexpected ways, but when she discovers the shocking truth about her predecessor, Emma (Jessica Plummer), she is forced to confront unsettling parallels.

‘As the timelines of the two women intertwine, Jane begins to wonder if her fate will be the same as the girl before her…’

According to what we’ve seen so far in the teaser, it’s going to be plenty of dark twists and turns, and it’ll be the ultimate sit-down evening whodunnit.

Who is in the cast of The Girl Before?

Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Jane

Jane is the new tenant in Edward’s mysterious property

Jane moved into Edward’s house as his first tenant in three years after experiencing a personal tragedy that inspires her to seek change in her life.

But, as she begins to figure out why the house has been vacant for so long, she is engulfed by owner Edward, who grows increasingly infatuated with her.

‘I’m very pleased to collaborate with this fantastic team on such a gripping narrative in my debut role as actor/producer,’ Gugu, who also serves as an associate producer on the series, said.

The actress has appeared in films such as Misbehavior, Beauty and the Beast, and Miss Sloane, while Black Mirror viewers may remember her from the 2016 film San Junipero.

Jessica Plummer plays Emma

Jessica Plummer plays Emma in The Girl Before

Jessica, who previously starred in EastEnders, plays Emma, a character about whom nothing is known – but who is confirmed as the ‘girl before’ mentioned in the show’s title.

Emma could end up like Jessica’s former character Chantelle in the BBC soap, who was murdered by her abusive husband Gray Atkins, according to the unsettling teaser (Toby-Alexander Smith).

Jessica debuted as a participant on 2020’s I’m A Celebrity… after quitting her job on EastEnders late last year. I have to get out of here! Prior to acting, she was a member of the girl band Neon Jungle.

David Oyelowo plays Edward

We’re pretty scared of Edward already

Edward is the creator of the enigmatic mansion, which requires its inmates to follow his strict rules and austere lifestyle.

‘The creative architecture and intricacy of this plot are mind-boggling. I’m excited to witness it, let alone be a part of it.

‘Plus, I’d travel anyplace to work with my pal Gugu again,’ David added.

David is more accustomed to big-screen parts, having played Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Louis Gaines in The Butler, and Emerson in Jack Reacher, among others.

Ben Hardy plays Simon

Ben Hardy plays Emma’s very insecure boyfriend Simon

In the episode, Simon is Emma’s boyfriend, and he is clearly devoted to her – but his fears quickly surface.

Not long into the drama, it becomes clear that the two have their own problems to contend with, which could jeopardise their future together.

Ben also appeared in EastEnders between 2013 and 2015, portraying Peter Beale in a former incarnation.

Since then, the actor has appeared in films such as X Men: Apocalypse and Bohemian Rhapsody, in which he played Queen drummer Roger Taylor.

Eleanor Moran, Rory Aitken, and Ben Pugh for 42, Ben Irving for the BBC, JP Delaney, and Lisa Brahman for the BBC, are executive producers.

Is there a trailer for The Girl Before?

The first-look trailer, which can be seen above, has been released by the BBC.

Jane is shown seeing the house and being told she can have “no ornaments, no photographs, no carpets or rugs,” while someone is seen playing with a model of the inside.

It goes on to say that both Emma and Jane end up romantically involved with Edward, although the reasons behind this are unknown.

When will the BBC drama be on TV?

On Sunday, December 19, at 9 p.m., BBC One and BBC iPlayer will premiere The Girl Before.

The engrossing drama will be accessible as a box set on BBC iPlayer following the first episode, which is great news for binge-watchers.

There are a total of four episodes to watch, with the following instalments airing on successive nights.

On Wednesday, December 22nd, the mini-series will come to an end.
