RAKHEE THAKRAR gets a new role in the BBC series Rules of the Game as Maya Benshaw, the new head of HR. But why did she depart EastEnders under the guise of Shabnam Masood?
The BBC One drama Rules of the Game, which focuses on hazardous workplace situations, has just begun broadcasting. Rakhee Thakrar plays Maya Benshaw, who has been hired as the new head of HR at an acclaimed corporation. Why did the actress abandon her role as Shabnam Masood in EastEnders?
Why did Rakhee Thakrar leave EastEnders as Shabnam Masood?
Between 2014 and 2016, the 37-year-old actress appeared in 167 episodes of the series.
She was last seen in the serial after Shabnam’s unsuccessful marriage to Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami).
When asked why she departed, the actress stated at the time: “Every now and again, a work and a group of people completely transform your life.
“That is unmistakably true of EastEnders. I’m extremely happy for the opportunity to play Shabnam Masood and her tale.
“I’m very thankful for my time on the show, it’s been brilliant.”
She claimed that she wanted to try new things and went on to star in Netflix’s Sex Education.
“It feels like the appropriate time for both myself and Shabnam to move on,” the actress said of her departure from EastEnders.
“My experience on this show has been really special, and I’m so grateful for having the chance to have played Shabs, she’s a real gift.
“A complex individual that I’ve enjoyed getting to know.” Now I feel like it’s time to explore new initiatives and meet new people.
“It was a hard decision as I really love this character and this show.”
With this in mind, it appears that her decision to leave Albert Square and go on to greener pastures was her own.
Her character had a great deal of suffering throughout her time on the show, and she was well-known for being a part of a heartbreaking stillbirth narrative.
The actress was nominated for a National Television Award for best dramatic performance for the storyline in which she and Kush had a stillbirth.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their feelings on the actress, who makes her BBC One debut in Rules of the Game.
Corey Terrett said: “Rakhee Thakrar would be such a good Doctor Who. #rulesofthegame”
Malcolm Struthers shared: “Good to see Rakhee Thakrar getting more leading roles.”
Since leaving EastEnders, the actress has been in a slew of other great shows, most recently the BBC’s psychological thriller The Girl Before.
She played Fatima in the romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral in 2019.
The actress is still working on a new musical fantasy picture, Wonka, which serves as a precursor to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
She previously revealed that she struggled to find work after quitting her EastEnders job in Walford.
She informed the Radio Times that she worked in a shop for numerous years and that “other projects” did not include working in a boutique apparel shop for two years.
“I left EastEnders and didn’t get any work. I couldn’t bear not doing anything, so I worked in a couple of shops.”
