Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney has attempted to defend her character’s devious actions as she schemes to “bump off” Ken Barlow.
Former drug addict Cassie Plummer, played by Claire Sweeney, has been stirring up trouble since arriving in Weatherfield and is once again up to no good.
Cassie has been looking after Ken Barlow (portrayed by William Roach) following his fall, and the two have recently developed a close friendship.
However, unbeknownst to Ken, Cassie is plotting to con the pensioner out of his money and has started slipping crushed tablets into his drinks.
Claire appeared on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Weekend on Sunday, March 16, where she attempted to justify Cassie’s behavior.
After a clip from the popular ITV soap aired, Alan remarked, “Little does he [Ken] know what’s in his cup!”
Claire replied, “I know, I’m like the smiling assassin, aren’t I? I mean, Ken Barlow—a national treasure!”
“And you’re the one trying to bump him off, Claire,” Alan added, prompting the 53-year-old actress to defend the storyline.
“Well, you know, there’s no sugarcoating it when you’re spiking a national treasure’s cup of tea,” she admitted.
“But that was just a tablet at first, and then I move on to [using] antihistamines with him.”
Alan looked surprised as Claire went on: “It’s really just to keep him a bit drowsy so he depends on me. That’s all it is.”
The host chuckled and playfully slid his cup away from Sweeney, joking, “I think I’ll just move my tea out of your reach!”
As their conversation wrapped up, Alan couldn’t resist subtly pressing Claire for any hints about Ken’s fate, saying, “I’m not sure if you’ll be taking out anyone else or if you’ll manage to get rid of Ken—and I suppose you don’t know either. And if you did, you wouldn’t tell me, would you?”
But fans were left hanging as the actress admitted, “I have no idea. It’s full of surprises, isn’t it?”
Will this be the end for Ken, or will Cassie’s sinister plans backfire, leaving her to face the consequences?
